The principles that govern the work
Wealth assembled over a lifetime, or several, is best treated as amanah — that which is placed in another’s hands and must one day be handed back whole.
The idea is old in this part of the world, and it still does useful work. It sets forth the terms under which Sapna Ventures assumes risk, prices capital and is liable for money that belongs to someone else.
Risk
Losses accrue in the same manner as gains and are more difficult to recover from a diminished basis. Every position is underwritten from the downside upwards. Sapna Ventures would rather forgo a good year than expose a family to a bad decade.
Time
Holdings are assessed on long-term views. Quarterly performance is recorded because it must be, though it is a poor guide to whether an investment was sound. Illiquidity is accepted where it is paid for properly and refused where it is not.
Ownership
When the position warrants it, Sapna Ventures takes board seats and governance rights, and participates in the management of a business. Influence tends to be worth more than diversification once a certain size is reached.
The firm
Sapna Ventures is a multi-family office operating out of Dubai. The firm invests the private wealth of a small number of families and maintains itself to a measure above all others: what is placed in its care is returned to a greater extent and undiminished.
Sapna Ventures manages investment strategies on behalf of families of substantial private wealth. The firm’s principals sit in the Dubai International Financial Centre, with a second office operating from Manchester, and the money the firm deploys reaches into Europe, North America, Asia and the Gulf.
The book of relationships is deliberately short. Capital cannot be allocated with conviction unless the truth is understood about the family behind it. Our firm studies what a family already owns, what obligations it carries, what it intends for the generation after next and what it will not compromise upon. That understanding takes years to accumulate and is not easily scaled.
